Sustainability!

Doing our bit ...

It's up to us!

I had no idea that a trip to the supermarket would or could have such an impact on me! But looking to buy some wine for our Welcome Packs I happened across a bottle that drew me to it ... Since then we have been in touch with the lovely guys at Hidden Wine and we are hoping that by working together we can help more people understand that it all starts with one small change ...
LAURA’S THOUGHTS
Over time I have become more and more aware of the  issues our planet faces, and over the years have tried to make my own home as eco friendly as possible, even planning to turn my lawn into a ‘wild meadow’ for the bees and butterflies, giving it back to nature. I have watched the world change through my life and sadly now we see the extent of the damage we have done. Believe it or not but when plastics were first introduced it was intended to stop deforestation, what wasn’t known then was plastics just don’t disappear, now we see vast masses of floating waste washing up on shores, polluted rivers already congested with rubbish and unable to breathe and sustain life, marine life dying tortuous, slow deaths trapped in unforgiving plastics, corals slowly dying and bleaching out … The list of damage we as a race are doing to our planet is almost endless. On a positive note though, global awareness means more and more people around the world are working towards a common goal, a healthier planet. Alternatives to our standard use plastics, ways of clearing our seas and giving them back to nature. People cultivating and replanting corals, regrowing Sea Grasses, there is hope, hope of a greener and healthier planet. But this can’t happen unless all of us do our bit! I will admit I used to think ‘well I’m only one person …’ but I realise everything starts with one first small step, everything starts somewhere! And now our aim is to make Drifting Wood Canal Breaks as planet friendly as possible and hopefully encourage others to make one small step . . .
Our canal system is seen by some as the perfect place to dump their unwanted goods, sadly it is not unusual to find a shopping trolley, cast out bikes, in fact anything you can hide in four feet of water lurking beneath the surface. Teams of volunteers do their best to breath new life into our canal system – A structure unique to the UK and full of historic feats of engineering, a man made water network that once was the only highway system in place.
Happening upon a rather lovely bottle of Sauvignon Blanc started a revolution at Drifting Wood Canal Breaks. We always put a bottle of wine on board as part of our Welcome Pack. One day, drawn initially by the actual bottle, Laura picked up a bottle of wine produced by the amazing The Hidden Sea winery. Reading their ‘Promise’ lit a fire …
“For every bottle of wine we sell, we remove and recycle 10 plastic bottles from the ocean”
It was a game changer and opened Laura’s eyes to the waste her boats were producing.
This started our mission to do our upmost to make our boats as ecofriendly as possible and to pass on a simple message … ‘We do have a choice in how we do things, and by committing to making our world a better place it only takes a few simple changes to make a huge difference.

THE HIDDEN SEA
Complimentary Wine
These guys are amazing, not only are their wines extremely pleasing to the palate but they are kind to our planet in ways I never dreamt possible. Not only is it Carbon Neutral, but they put their money where their mouths are and help fund numerous charities around the world in an effort to clear plastics from our oceans. The fact it is Vegan too is just the cherry on the cake for us.
Hello – The Hidden Sea
Everything you could want to know about these guys is here … Personally I think they rock!
ECOVER
Cleaning Products
As all waste water, other than the Black water tank (toilet waste) drains directly into the canal. It’s a delicate balance that keeps our canals and rivers populated with life and we want to do our bit to make sure our boats have minimum impact on this.
Our Mission and Beliefs | Ecover
These guys really do want to take cleaning to a new level of clean!

METHOD
Personal Hygiene Products
Knowing the waste water joins the canal system it is up to us to minimize this impact as much as humanly possible.
business for good | method uk
Here you can find out exactly why we think they are worthy of being on our boats!

WHO GIVES A CRAP
Toilet Roll
A name that is becoming increasingly popular and for good reason! Trees are fundamentally important to our planet yet companies see fit to simply cut them down when there is an alternative, use what we already have at our disposal, waste paper! Again, these guys help fund projects around the world.
Our Global Impact | Who Gives A Crap
They do fabulous work around the world with sanitation and fresh water!

MYOCEANS
Kitchen Roll
Based here in the UK these guys are all about the seas around our island, working with local Marine Conservation groups. Their main aim is to produce their products, not just kitchen rolls, with no added plastics. Many don’t probably even realise that many of our ‘paper products’ contain an alarming amount of plastic meaning they don’t break down, you can’t compost them … In fact they simply end up adding to the mountains of waste we already produce.
Our Impact | Let's Make An Ocean Of Difference | My Oceans
Supporting our own coast line and beyond!

THE HUMBLE COMPANY
Toothbrushes
Yes, we even have eco friendly toothbrushes on board for those who forget to bring theirs! And I can personally vouch for them as I use them at home! Bamboo and plant bristles work amazingly well and you aren’t polluting with more plastic!
You can read their story .. but it all started with a dentist helping those in countries with little or no dental health care
Our story | Why We Started | The Humble Co.
By supporting this company you are helping to make dental care available in countries with little or no dental hygiene access!

PEACE WITH THE WILD
Bin bags & Liners
The latest find! A UK family who have been ‘waste conscious for years, now run their business that promotes and supplies all things wonderful for our planet! There’s a lot of choice of course, but I just love that these guys started in a tiny way, just like I did … Small is beautiful and powerful when we work together!
About Us - Peace With The Wild
These guys are bringing so many like minded people together all with the same aim … a greener planet for all!
